Subject: [PJ] Thomas Thompson
Good morning everyone and happy new year to all,
I've been a bit quite lately tracing a line of my husband's family who were free settlers and have come to a halt at a gentleman called Thomas Thompson. I would like to find out if Thomas was a convict but as there is little to be read about him I am wondering if anyone may know anything about the Thomas Thompsons who came to the colony in the early 1800's. There were a few of them.
My Thomas married a Catherine Critchley in 1831 Newcastle area. Catherine was the daughter of a marine of the 48th Regiment and was born in Tasmania. Thomas died in 1842 in Sydney and a transcript of his death says he was a coloured man. I am assuming this meant he was from the West Indies or Africa and not an Aborigine as from what I have read so far most Aboriginal deaths are recorded that way. I have emailed the person who has claimed a Thomas Thompson on the Claim a Convict site but had no response and am wondering if anyone may be related to the Critchley family who settled in the Maitland area or the Hurley or Palmer families of the same area as poor Catherine Thompson nee Critchley married Farrell Hurley in 1843 after Thomas died but Farrell then died and Catherine married a Mr Palmer and they lived "happily together until Catherine's death.
I hope everyone has a successful year of searching and maybe I will get to see some of you at various places that I will be visiting when I come to Sydney in early February.
Regards Anne in Townsville

From Dennis Lloyd, in reply to Sharon Money.
Hi Sharon, how nice it is to at last find a positive connection to the Money line I am related to. My GG Grandmother was given a New Testament(which I still have) at the age of 8 in 1861 by her mother. Handwritten entries list all the family history (except only two Money entries), and one entry says that her grandfather was General John Money of Crown Point Estate (Trowse Newton), Norfolk. This John Money is the Balloonist and soldier who fought against the Americans in NY State under Burgoyne. The death certificate lists his full name as John Dennington Money Palmer, father as General John Money and mother as Sarah Dennington, and he arrived here in Australia about 1827. That is about 10 years after John Money died. I cannot make any further connections, perhaps you can help.

Obituary in The Catholic Press, Thursday 6 August 1936:
Mrs. Sarah Kelly.
Bathurst lost one of its oldest and most widely known identities with the death, on the 30th ult., of Mrs. Sarah Kelly, of William-street. Up to four months ago Mrs. Kelly was in perfect health, despite her advancing years. Born 84 years ago at Hill End, she retained to the last vivid recollections of the early days of that historic goldfield. An accomplished horsewoman in her younger days, it was little hardship for her to ride from Hill End to Mudgee, a distance of 50 miles. She remembered the findings by Byers and Holtermann of their famous nugget, and many other highlights in the development of Hill End. Her husband, Mr. Thomas Kelly, died 33 years ago. She is survived by two brothers, Messrs. Archer Palmer (Hill End) and Fred Money Palmer (retired postmaster at Bondi), and by a family of four sons, Messrs. William Kelly (Bathurst), Arthur (Sydney), Frederick (Tarana) and Alan (Sydney), and two daughters, Mrs. J. Stevens (Katoomba) and Miss Ida Kelly (Bathurst). Two other sons, Messrs. Albert and Harry Kelly, predeceased her, the latter having lost his life at the war.
The funeral moved from her late residence for the Catholic portion of Bathurst Cemetery. At the chapel and the graveside prayers were recited by Rev. Father Cotter, C.M., and Rev. Father Emelhainz.
The chief mourners were brothers, sons and grandsons of the deceased. The pallbearers were her sons and grandsons, Messrs. Arthur, Allen and Bert, and Reg. Stevens.

No 123-125 Built 1903: The original owner of this property was Walter McPhillamy and the house was first occupied by James T Gray. The property was sold to Dr Lucy Gullett in 1906. It was later owned and lived in for many years by W F (Bill) Kelly, owner-Manager of the Burlington Theatre.
The house, known as 125 William Street, was built in 1903 for Walter McPhillamy. It was probably built as an income producing investment.
The house was designed by John Job Copeman, a local architect, Mr Copeman practiced in Bathurst from 1890 to about 1914 and some thirty houses designed by him still exist in the City.
Sometime in 1905 the house was bought for Doctor Lucy Gullett who is believed to have been the first female general practitioner in Bathurst.
A picture theatre manager, William Frederick Kelly, bought the house from Doctor Gullett about 1914. Mr Kelly was associated with the Burlington Open Air Theatre in lower William Street, between Howick and Durham Streets, in 1910. Later he was the manager of a closed theatre in William Street between Keppel and Piper Streets. This theatre was also known as the Burlington. It was renovated in the 1930s and became known as the New Burlington and, later, the Tudor Theatre.
In 1950 Mr Kelly sold his interests in Bathurst theatres and retired
